About

Our Story of Commodity Fumigation

We started The Fumigation Company to provide an outlet for all things fumigation. To help the market recognize the benefits and place for fumigation. The narrative of today’s approach to Commodity Fumigation is influenced by behaviors that may not always recognize the purpose and potential of fumigants. We want to help drive value through training, innovation, and digital enhancements. Helping accelerate development of new products, and providing transparency of service, leads to continuous improvement and maximum realized value.

Fumigants are not “Magic Beans” – you don’t apply a fumigant and mysteriously pests vanish. In some markets, fumigation is treated as a “checkbox” service. “Checkbox” means that fumigation as a condition of sale to prevent economic loss. Fumigants are applied science. Applied by choosing the appropriate fumigant for your condition, applying the correct dose, monitoring gas levels, validated by managing those levels to achieve a Concentration over Time (CT) factor. When good choices and diligence of application are delivered, value will be realized.

Many who are beyond the “Magic Beans” and “Checkbox” mentalities, still fall into the “Have Bug Kill” approach. Fumigators who target active / post-embryonic stages of the insect miss the true target for fully solving the pest problem. It is the egg that is consistently the challenge for fumigators. By targeting the egg, all other stages are eliminated with few exceptions (resistance).

As an all-things fumigation outlet, The Fumigation Company wants to help markets understand the challenges and truths around the current state of fumigants. Providing comprehensive information around phosphine resistance and the fact this does not mean phosphine is no longer effective, but rather how can we manage this concern to our future benefit. By just changing chemistry and not correcting behaviors, we move resistance risk to the next too.

For another example of leading discussions, Sulfuryl Fluoride and its “challenge” with egg efficacy is another area for consideration. While Sulfuryl Fluoride is effective on egg stages, it does require certain conditions for success. This said, do not ignore the speed and penetrating capability of the SF tool. The challenges and benefits should be recognized and recognized comparatively and objectively.

We hope that our content can be useful both nationally and internationally as stored product pest solutions are relatively universal. We can all learn from improvements and novel ideas across fumigation experiences.

If your objective is to reduce or eliminate the need for Commodity Fumigation from your program, who better to help than those immersed in this business for decades? Providing situational strategies to identify and isolate pest activity through post-fumigation observations can help you move to a more managed approach.
