Commodity Fumigation is an essential tool in the food safety toolbox. A critical control tool when pests get out of control, in conditions of export or import requirement, or when pest pressure is high and regular treatments are needed. 

Public fumigation belief has changed over the years and what has been lost is the low to no residue benefits of fumigant tools. Remove fumigants and if cleaning alone does not control the pests, an overreliance of heavy residual pesticides can occur. With this understanding, one could argue that what consumers want is low to no pesticide residue and no pests.  This is the strength of fumigants.

Fumigant costs are rising, and value delivered must match those increases. Training in safety and compliance is of the utmost importance. With this said, training fumigators to be more effective with delivering value is also important.
