Fumigation Perspective
Let’s level set fumigants place in post-harvest pest protection and food safety program strategies. There is no substitute for proper sanitation. Fumigants or any pest management tool should never be looked at as a supplement to good commodity management practices or proper cleaning. The reality is, when you cannot find the source of the pest problem, Commodity Fumigation will, but only when it’s set up properly. When pests overwhelm, fumigants can provide that clean break needed as part of an overall effective commodity management or food safety program.
Other times, fumigation is a condition of sale, or condition of trade for import and export of commodities.
The Fumigation Company wants to help you develop safe, effective, compliant fumigation programs(s).
Fumigants have been around for more than a century. For most of this time they have been treated as a mystery, a sort of “magic bean”. You put the material or gas in a sealed area and days later – everything should be dead? Fumigants are not magic; they are applied science. When used properly, fumigants can deliver incredible results, when applied ineffectively – they are expensive.
Fumigant outcomes can have wide and varying results. Their application labels have “grey areas” allowing applicator manipulation, this coupled with the autonomy of evacuated facilities when many fumigations occur, gives fumigators ability to choose convenience over science-based needs which are required to deliver best outcomes.
The Fumigation Company wants to help you experience successful science-based results that fumigants were intended to provide.
When managing pests in your operation, think of your pest control options as “tools in the toolbox.” Each tool has its own special function.
Some operations have serious challenges with pest pressure. Whether older structure, challenging suppliers, or a host of other scenarios, Commodity Fumigation can be a true solution. In some of these challenging conditions, trying to supplement fogging or using liquid residuals drastically increase the physical residues of organo-phosphates and pyrethroids. These are tools to be used in appropriate moderation, not tools to stop a pest hemorrhage.

Commodity Fumigation In Action
Human foods adulterated by insects cause yield loss and brand reputation to commodity producers, food processors and storage operations.
One example of our successful impact was reviewing the supply chain for an international philanthropic food aid program. The year prior they lost 11%, and pests were a large part of this loss. After evaluation of their supply chain, we were able to improve their process to better protect exported products and now more hungry mouths will be filled.
In this event, we found poor fumigation practices throughout the supply chain as the primary issue causing losses. Too much reliance on a decades old, self-evolved process had become ineffective. Program review like this on an annual, three year or five-year cycle ais needed. So much changes over time – improved safety, required regulation and or better methods.
